Product Information
Description
Strong contrast is what gives Barbican its character. The black-stained oak finish and walnut veneers create a darker, more architectural look than a standard bookcase, while the black metal legs keep the profile lifted and modern rather than heavy.
The layout is what makes it especially useful. Open sections across the upper part give plenty of room for ceramics, books and decorative pieces, while the lower cupboard helps keep less display-worthy items tucked away. In the centre, three adjustable shelves make the unit more flexible, while the fixed shelves to each side give the overall design a more structured feel. Sliding cupboard doors keep the front clean and neat, and the cut-out circular handles with wood panels behind add a detail that feels distinctive without becoming fussy. As part of Gallery Direct’s Packed-Flat Design Project, it is designed for easier delivery through the home with reduced packaging, and the tools needed for assembly are supplied.

FAQ's
What makes the Barbican Display Unit different from a standard shelving unit?
It combines open display shelving with a lower cupboard, so it works for styling and storage at the same time. The mixed black and walnut finish also gives it a stronger design presence than a plainer shelving unit.
Are all of the shelves adjustable?
No. The three shelves in the central open section are adjustable, while the shelves on the left and right sections are fixed.
What can the lower cupboard section be used for?
It is useful for keeping everyday items out of sight, especially anything that would make the open shelving feel cluttered. That balance makes the unit practical as well as decorative.
Do the sliding cupboard doors change how the unit works in everyday use?
Yes. Sliding doors help keep the front looking neat and make it easier to access the cupboard space without the swing of hinged doors.
Why do the handles look different from a typical cupboard design?
The cut-out circular handles with wood panels behind are one of the key visual details of Barbican. They give the lower section a more distinctive look and help break up the darker finish.
Does the black and walnut finish feel very heavy in a room?
It has a strong look, but the open shelving and metal legs stop it from feeling too solid. The contrast between the darker frame and warmer walnut sections gives it more depth than a fully black unit.
Is Barbican better for books or for decorative display?
It can do both, but it is especially effective when used for a mix of books, ceramics and display pieces. The varied shelf layout helps the unit feel more styled than a simple bookcase.
What does Gallery Direct’s Packed-Flat Design Project mean for this piece?
It means the unit is designed for easier delivery into the home while reducing the packaging needed. For this piece, the required tools are also supplied for assembly.
Does the slimmer depth make Barbican easier to place than a deeper cabinet?
Yes. Its upright shape and slimmer depth make it easier to use where you want storage and display without bringing too much bulk into the room.
