Rooted in the Ribble Valley. Run by Family. Built with Heart.

Shackletons Home & Garden is a family-run home and garden store based in Chatburn, in the Ribble Valley. For more than two decades, the business has grown from its beginnings in landscaping into a well-known destination for furniture, outdoor living, home accessories and garden inspiration.

The story began around 2000, when brothers David and Paul Shackleton moved from hands-on landscape gardening into retail, bringing with them a practical understanding of how people wanted to use their homes and gardens. What started as a traditional garden centre has grown into the Shackletons many customers know today, a place shaped by family values, thoughtful service and a lasting connection to the local community.

Our Journey

Pre 2000

Early days - planting the seeds

Before Shackletons existed, David and Paul were building their reputation as landscape gardeners across the Ribble Valley. Working closely with customers on outdoor spaces gave them valuable practical knowledge and a real understanding of how people wanted to use their gardens.

Those early relationships, along with their hands-on experience, laid the foundations for the business that would follow.

2000

Shackletons Begins

At the turn of the millennium, the brothers opened Shackletons in Chatburn. In the early days, it was a traditional garden centre, with plants and gardening essentials at its heart.

Even then, the focus was clear; quality products, helpful advice and a warm welcome for every customer who came through the gates.

Early 2000's

Learning and Evolving

As the business grew, so did the range. During these early years, Shackletons explored new categories, from hot tubs to aquatics, always responding to customer demand and learning what worked best.

This period helped shape the business and deepened its understanding of how homes and gardens were becoming places to enjoy, not simply spaces to maintain.

2010

Investing in Growth

By the late 2000s and into the 2010s, it was clear that customers were looking for more inspiration and more choice. In response, the Chatburn site was significantly developed.

The plants and greenhouse areas were expanded to offer a broader and more inspiring selection, while the garden furniture and outdoor living departments were strengthened to reflect the growing importance of outdoor entertaining and relaxation. Retail space increased, displays became more lifestyle-led, and the overall experience evolved.

These changes marked a turning point for the business, helping transform Shackletons from a traditional garden centre into a broader home and garden destination; something that local publications such as Ribble Valley Live have highlighted over the years.

2010's

Becoming a Destination Store

Throughout the 2010s, Shackletons continued to refine and expand its offer. Indoor furniture became a major focus, alongside premium outdoor collections and carefully chosen home accessories.

The store developed more immersive displays and introduced a café experience that encouraged customers to slow down, explore and enjoy the visit. Word of mouth grew steadily, with customers travelling from across Lancashire, Yorkshire and beyond to visit the Chatburn store.

By this stage, Shackletons had become more than a garden centre; it had become a destination for home and garden inspiration.

2023

Redbrick Mill

A major milestone came in 2023 with the opening at Redbrick Mill in West Yorkshire. This expansion introduced the Shackletons brand to a wider audience while strengthening its position as a respected regional home and furniture retailer.

2025

Fox Valley Concept Store

In May 2025, Shackletons launched a new concept store at Fox Valley, working closely with Gallery Direct to create a fresh, design-led retail experience.

The opening reflected how the business continues to evolve while staying true to its core values of quality, service and thoughtful retail.

Today

Still Proudly Family Run

Today, Shackletons continues to grow while staying true to the values it was built on; personal service, quality products and a genuine understanding of how people live at home and in the garden.

From its Ribble Valley roots to newer locations including Redbrick Mill and Fox Valley, the business remains proudly family run, focused on helping customers create homes and gardens that feel welcoming, considered and lasting.
