Product Information

Vintage Sofa Company Ellis Wingback Chair in Hunting Lodge Harris Tweed Fabric and Tan Leather, with brass stud detailing and turned wooden feet with front castors

Description

The Ellis works best when it is treated as a proper occasional armchair, not just a smaller companion to a sofa. Its appeal comes from the way the winged back and compact footprint combine: it gives you the visual structure and comfort of a traditional reading chair, but in a size that is easier to place in a study, bedroom corner or smaller sitting area.

The Hunting Lodge Harris Tweed is central to that effect. On a chair of this scale, the herringbone texture is seen at closer range, so it brings more than colour alone. It adds a dry, tailored surface that suits the upright shape and gives the piece a quieter kind of depth than a smooth plain fabric would. The result feels grounded, heritage-led and detailed without looking heavy.

Tan leather on the wings, arms and lower front rail gives the frame more definition. It outlines the shape of the chair, sharpens the profile and adds warmth where a full tweed finish might have looked flatter. The contrast also makes the wingback form more noticeable, which is important on a piece like this, where silhouette is a large part of the appeal. Brass studs and turned legs with castors reinforce the traditional furniture influence, but the overall look stays neat rather than overly formal.

Made by Vintage Sofa Company, the Ellis is the kind of chair that earns its place through shape as much as upholstery. It suits interiors that want one seat with more character and finish than a standard armchair, especially where a full leather club chair would feel too dark and a plain fabric chair would not bring enough presence.

FAQ's

What makes the Ellis feel more like a reading chair than a standard accent chair?

The shaped wingback, supportive seat and upright proportions give it a more settled, supportive feel than many decorative occasional chairs. It is designed to be used properly, not just placed for show.

Why does Hunting Lodge Harris Tweed work particularly well on this chair?

On a compact wing chair, the tweed is seen more closely, so its herringbone texture becomes a bigger part of the design. It gives the Ellis a tailored, heritage-led surface that suits the shape better than a flatter plain fabric would.

What do the leather panels add to the chair, beyond contrast?

They do more than add warmth. The leather outlines the wings, arms and base, which helps define the silhouette and gives the chair a more finished, furniture-led look. On a smaller piece, that extra structure makes a noticeable difference.

Does the wingback shape change how the chair sits in a room?

Yes. It gives the Ellis more vertical presence than a lower, squarer chair, which makes it better suited to corners and reading spots where you want one piece to hold its own visually without taking up too much floor space.

Is the lower leather front rail just decorative, or does it affect the look of the chair?

It affects the whole balance of the piece. The leather rail grounds the chair visually, adds durability at the front edge and stops the tweed upholstery from looking too soft or insubstantial.

Do the castor feet make the Ellis feel old-fashioned?

Not on this design. They support the traditional character of the chair, but because the overall shape is clean and the tweed palette is restrained, the result feels classic rather than fussy.

Where does this chair work best in the home?

It is especially well suited to studies, reading corners, bedrooms and smaller sitting rooms where one chair needs to bring shape, comfort and finish without the scale of a larger armchair.

What does Vintage Sofa Company bring to a chair like this?

Vintage Sofa Company brings the upholstery control and traditional shaping that make the Ellis feel resolved. On a chair with tweed texture, leather framing, studwork, castors and a winged outline, proportion and finishing are what stop it from feeling generic.
