Product Information

Vintage Sofa Company Dickinson Armchair Upholstered In Patchwork fabrics & Cerato Brown Leather, with brass stud detailing, high back with button tufting, and turned wooden legs

Description

Rather than relying on loud contrast, the Dickinson uses patchwork in a more composed way. The mix of tweeds, checks, velvets and textured weaves creates variation across the chair, but the palette feels mellow and gathered rather than busy, which gives it a warmer, more settled character than many patchwork designs.

The Cerato brown leather on the arms is an important part of that balance. It brings a smoother, richer finish against the softer fabric sections, helps frame the shape of the chair and adds durability in the areas that see the most regular contact. Deep button tufting through the high back reinforces the Chesterfield influence, while brass stud detailing and turned wooden legs give the piece a more traditional furniture feel.

Made by Vintage Sofa Company, the Dickinson is not just decorative. It combines its mixed-material finish with the build quality expected from a substantial British-made armchair, including a hardwood frame, hand-tied springs and careful upholstery throughout. That construction matters on a piece like this, where the design needs proper shaping and control to feel convincing.

This armchair suits interiors that want texture and personality without losing a sense of comfort and familiarity. It works particularly well as a feature chair in living spaces, bedrooms, studies or hospitality settings where a plain fabric chair would feel too flat, but a brighter patchwork piece might feel too sharp.

PLEASE NOTE - Image is for illustration purposes and each piece will feature a unique patchwork pattern and mix of fabrics

FAQ's

Will my Dickinson armchair look exactly like the one in the image?

Not exactly. Each chair uses a unique mix and arrangement of patchwork fabrics, so no two pieces will be identical. The overall look, warm colour direction and combination of patchwork with Cerato brown leather stay true to the design, but the exact fabric layout will vary from chair to chair.

What kind of colour palette does the patchwork use?

This design uses a warmer, more muted patchwork mix than brighter multi-colour chairs. Tones such as burgundy, taupe, grey, cream, charcoal and softer pinks give it depth and variation without making it feel overly loud, which helps the chair sit more comfortably in lived-in interiors.

Why are the arms finished in Cerato brown leather instead of patchwork fabric?

The leather arms help anchor the design visually and stop the chair from feeling overworked. They also make practical sense, as the arms are one of the main contact points in daily use, so the leather brings both durability and a richer contrast to the softer woven fabrics.

Does the high buttoned back change how the chair feels to sit in?

Yes. The high back gives the Dickinson a more enclosing, supportive feel than a lower occasional chair, and it adds to the chair’s visual presence. The deep buttoning also helps keep the back looking structured, which suits the more traditional shape.

What stops this patchwork chair from looking too busy?

A lot of that comes down to balance. The patchwork is framed by the smoother leather arms, the colours are more restrained than on many patchwork pieces, and the classic Chesterfield details give the design a clear structure. Those elements help it feel considered rather than random.

Is the Dickinson best used as a feature chair on its own?

In most rooms, yes. It has enough detail and personality to work as a standalone piece, especially in a reading corner, bedroom or living room scheme that needs one chair with more character. It can sit alongside plainer upholstery particularly well, as that gives the patchwork room to stand out.

How will the Cerato brown leather change over time?

With regular use, the leather will soften and develop more natural character. Light creasing and a gentler surface patina are part of the appeal, and they tend to suit this style of chair well by adding even more warmth to the overall finish.

What does Vintage Sofa Company bring to a design like this?

Vintage Sofa Company combines expressive upholstery with traditional British sofa and chair making. On a piece like the Dickinson, that means the patchwork design is supported by proper structure, careful shaping and classic detailing, so the chair feels like a serious upholstery piece rather than a decorative novelty.
